TMJ Muscle Pain

TMJ MusclesIt is easy to see why patients that have TMJ problems may have symptoms of headache, neck and shoulder pain!  By looking closely at the image above you can see how inter-related the muscles of the jaw, head, neck and shoulder are.

This also helps to explain why symptoms of TMJ can arise from problems that originate in the neck, upper back and shoulder.

Although many patients that have jaw joint (TMJ) problems may have dental problems that need attention, this illustrations should make it clear why simply placing a splint in the mouth will not solve all the problems with TMJ.  A night splint or bite guard will not help neck and shoulder joint problems.
